1. The most important practice you can adopt is regularly cleaning your shoes. After wearing them, quickly wipe down your shoes to remove excess moisture. Moisture that is left sitting on your shoes will absorb into the fabric and distort it's shape. Don't forget to clean the inside of the shoe as well. Refreshing the inside of your shoes will prevent them from becoming damp. You can ruin your shoes if too much moisture builds up inside of them.
2. When your shoes are made of leather, there is an extra step. After cleaning them, you'll want to condition the leather. This will help keep the fabric moisturized. You want to keep your leather goods moisturized because when they dry out the material can crack.
3. Skip the conditioning step only if your shoes are not made of leather, then apply a protectant spray or wax. These sprays are widely available online and at your local store. Once your shoes have dried you are ready to show them off.
If maintaining your shoes sounds like too much of an investment for you, consider purchasing shoes with rubber soles. Water slides off rubber easily and does not damage the material. Fortunately we offer our Passport ballet flats with rubber and leather soles.

Dana Prigge’ stays notably stylish while always remaining genuinely comfortable. Her style motto is that she believes all women are beautiful and that each one of us adds something unique to the world.
On Monday, we went along for a coffee run. Dana paired our Peppy leopard haircalf ballet flats with a classic mid-length camel trench coat, coordinating comfy striped sweater, and a black cross body bag to go with her skinny black pants. The neutrals in her outfit really make the leopard flats pop!
By Friday, we found Dana connecting with nature at her local pond. She switched out her trench coat for a white fur bomber jacket. The vivid color on her lavender sweater balances out the vivid leopard print on her Peppy flats. After taking a walk around the pond, Dana armed herself with a loaf of bread and was off to feed the ducks.
]]>1. Uneven Wearing on the Sole: If your shoes start to slouch or lean on their own, the sole of your shoe might be uneven. An worn sole can make you more likely to slip on uneven or wet surfaces. When the sole of your shoe is not straight the shoe has less traction and shock absorbency. If you continue to wear shoes with uneven soles, over a long period of time, this can put stress on your lower body and negatively affect the way you walk.
2. Water Damage: Continuously wearing your shoes in the rain, especially if the sole is made of leather, can cause you to have to resole your favorite shoes sooner than later.
3. The Sole is Starting to Split: The way to tell if the sole of your shoe is splitting, look at the edge of the upper part of the shoe. If the seam where the upper meets the sole is bubbling or becoming loose, then it's time to resole your shoes.
4. There's a Hole in Your Sole: A hole in the sole of your shoe is the most notable sign that the sole needs to be replaced. It can also be a sign that you've waited too long and resoling the shoe is no longer an option. If you can notice that the interior of the shoe has also been damaged, you should consult with a cobbler before moving forward with resoling your shoe.
Not every shoe is made the same so not every shoe can be resoled. When the cost to resole the shoe is more than you purchased the shoe for, resoling it might not be worth the trouble. Most shoes of higher quality like our Italian Suede Bootie Eva can be resoled. If you are unsure whether or not your shoes can be resoled, contact the manufacturer. The manufacturer also might be able to give you a recommendation of a trusted cobbler. When changing a shoe sole it's essential to replace it with a sole of the same quality or better.

Full Grain Leather
Full grain leather is seen as the highest quality of leather and also the most expensive. It is sourced from the hide's top layer and is left in it's natural state. Being the grain is left untouched the leather may have a few natural blemishes. Full grain leather ages well and has proven to be more durable than its leather counterparts, thus the higher price tag.
Top Grain Leather
Top grain leather can be classified by it's smooth close to suede texture like our Bayonne Nubuck Leather Booties or by it's stained grain similar to our classic Jigsaw Leather Flats. The leather is made by splitting the hide's top layer in half and is smoothed to remove the natural imperfections. Since the leather has been smoothed down, top grain leather is more flexible and will stretch over time.
Split Grain, or Corrected Grain Leather
Familiarly referred to as genuine leather when shopping, the term is misleading and is used inconsistently often. Split grain leather is made from the layers of the hide that are left after the top has been split away. The grain is then manipulated to appear more natural. You can spot split grain leather if the grain has been embossed or spray painted. It also is more likely to have a harder exterior than top or full grain leather.
Bonded Leather, or Blended Leather
The cheapest and most common, bonded leather is made from the hide's left over pieces. They are bonded together by latex or polyurethane, then spray painted to look like top or full grain leather. This type of leather falls apart quickly and is the lowest grade of leather.
Shop smarter by being knowledgeable of what kind of leather you are buying, you can avoid problems like over paying or purchasing counterfeit products.
]]>First, the materials used in the waterproof shoe’s construction must be of a high quality to endure the effects of water damage on the material. Low quality leather may hold up for a few wears in bad weather, but physics will undoubtedly prevail and cause the leather to blister, bubble, peel and flake due to changing temperature and moisture levels. For the sole material; rubber is generally the optimal choice due to its natural waterproofing and high flexibility for a comfortable wear. As for rainproof clothing using quality materials, Weartherain features a superb selection of waterproof rainwear clothing. Summarily, an effective waterproof product must be well-constructed at its core.
Second, all seals and seams must be flush, with no lingering gaps or imperfections. A sub-par or low quality seal creates an opportunity for water to seep through, and we’ve all faced the dreadful outlook for the remainder of our day shortly after stepping into cold wet slush during our morning commute. Third, the waterproof treatment (polyurethane being one example) must be of high quality and expertly applied to the leather. Any leather areas not properly treated will become weak links in the weatherproof chain.
Finally, we must be aware of the limitations of the waterproof shoe style we select for our specific purpose. A waterproof shoe like the Madison will keep your toes dry during a commute or business meeting in inclement weather, but it wouldn’t be well suited for fly fishing in knee-deep water. It lies on the shoulders of production experts to achieve the delicate golden balance between style, comfort and function.

To spot faux leather look for a uniform pattern on the fabric. A uniform pattern most likely means the fabric was embossed. Bonded leather is often embossed to appear more like grain, or natural, leather. Natural grain leather is unprocessed or untreated, the fabric should have a minor color variation. If the color of your fabric is solid that could be another sign that the leather is not authentic.
Be smart when purchasing leather goods. Stay one step ahead by looking over the fabric before you buy.

For waterproof leather boots, use a medium to soft bristle brush to remove excess surface dirt. We suggest using a brush exclusively made for cleaning leather. A vegetable brush or toothbrush will also work. Second you are going to want to wipe your boot down with a damp cloth, then let it dry in a cool area.
The Pandore boot (photographed) is made with nubuck, also known as suede leather. To clean nubuck leather boots start with removing the extra surface dirt with a medium to soft bristle brush. When only the stain remains, in a circular motion buff out the stain with a leather buffing bar. Brush away any dirt that starts lifting. If the stain is not coming out, try adding a small amount of water to the buffing bar. Once the stain is fully lifted, smooth back the fabric and let your boots dry in a cool area.
In order for your boots to dry properly store them in a cool, non-humid, room. Keep them away from high heat sources like blow dryers and fireplaces.
A genuine leather boot is a style essential, but if you do not regularly maintain the fabric dirt and moisture from everyday usage can break down the leather. This will cause the leather on your boots to dry up or crumble over time. If your leather boots begin to look dry you can wipe them down with leather conditioner. Doing this routinely should restore the moisture in the leather and prevent further cracking.

What makes a ballet flat? Similar to women’s ballet slippers, ballet flats usually have a very thin heel or none at all. The upper part of the shoe is typically constructed of leather such as napa, suede, or glossy patent leather. Mesh is sometimes used as well. Soles may consist of leather, rubber, plastic, and everything in between. Certain French style flats have no right or left-foot designation, and are similar to socks in the sense that one may put either shoe on either foot. Variations on the flats design include:
